Hi,

What is an SR-22, and how long do you need one?

It is not insurance — it is proof of insurance your state may ask for after certain violations.

What is an SR-22, and how long do you need one?

What it is

An SR-22 is a certificate your insurance company files with your state to prove you carry at least the required liability insurance. It is not a type of policy. States usually ask for one after serious violations — for example driving uninsured, a DUI, or too many offenses — often to get your license back.

How long you need it

The state sets the period, and it is often a few years. If the policy lapses or is cancelled during that time, the insurer must tell the state, which can suspend your license again. Your court or DMV paperwork says exactly how long your requirement lasts.

How to get one

Ask an insurer that files SR-22s in your state; not every company does. They file it for you, sometimes for a small filing fee. A few states use a similar form with a different name (such as FR-44).
