Flexible dates: why a day either side can change the fare

Why the same seat costs different amounts

Airlines sell seats in price buckets and open or close them as a flight fills up. A busy day — the start of a holiday, a Friday evening — usually sells out its cheaper buckets first, so moving a day either side can change what you pay.

How to use it

  • Search your exact dates first, then try a day earlier and a day later.
  • Look at the whole trip: a cheaper flight that adds a hotel night or arrives at 2 am may not be cheaper.
  • Prices are live and change until you book; a fare you saw an hour ago may be gone.

What not to believe

There is no magic day of the week or hour that is always cheapest. Compare the live prices for the dates you can actually travel.
