Short layovers: how tight is too tight?

One ticket protects you

When both flights are on one booking, the airline sells only connections it considers possible at that airport, and if the first flight is late and you miss the second, it is responsible for getting you to your destination. Two separate tickets have no such protection.

When to want more time

  • International to domestic: you may need to clear immigration and customs and re-check bags.
  • Changing terminals or airports.
  • Travelling with children, a lot of luggage or anyone who needs assistance.
  • Winter weather or a first flight that is often late.

Check before you book

Look at where each flight stops and for how long before you choose. If a connection looks tight, ask Pete for another option.
